Activity description

Discover the Southern Highlands on an adventurous Private Jeep tour in The Valley of Thor at Þórsmörk.

The Valley of Thor, or Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) in Icelandic, is a nature reserve in the southern highlands, located between three glaciers; Eyjafjallajökull (the famous glacier volcano that erupted in 2010 and caused widespread disruption to air traffic in Europe), Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. Þórsmörk is a paradise for hikers, photographers and nature lovers with its ice-capped peaks, jagged mountain ridges and valleys rich with moss and birch woodland.

The route to Þórsmörk has many unbridged river-crossings with deep fast-flowing waters, famous for trapping tourists in un-modified rental cars. But you have nothing to fear as you will be safely seated in a modified Super Jeep that can take you to places that will leave you speechless. Have your camera ready to capture all the beauty that Iceland has to offer.
Starting with the Seljalandsfoss waterfall that you can walk behind, you will continue on Gígjökull which is an outlet that flows from Eyjafjallajökull. The day will end with a hike around Básar, an oasis of natural birch woods and Valahnúkur with a relatively easy 220m (722ft) ascent hike.

Do not miss out on the experience of a lifetime and book your Private Jeep tour in The Valley of Thor at ÞÓRSMÖRK!

Course of events

Pick-up: 9:45-10:15 at the N1 gas station at Hvolsvöllur.

The first stop is at Seljalandsfoss, the waterfall you can walk behind. Yes, you read it right, this might not be the most visited waterfall in Iceland but it certainly is the most special one, as you can walk behind it. Just remember to bring a raincoat with you because it is not unlikely that spray from the waterfall will reach you.

Gígjökull is an outlet that flows from Eyjafjallajökull. Previously, there was a glacial lagoon underneath the glacier, which was one of the gems of Þórsmörk, but it was destroyed in the famous 2010 Eyjafjalla volcanic eruption. therefore today it is possible to drive on the former bottom of the lagoon almost up to the glacier.

Básar, an oasis of natural birch woods is a wonderland for hikers with hiking trails and paths in all directions.
You will get a chance to stretch your legs, hiking up Valahnúkur on a relatively easy 220m (722ft) ascent that takes about an hour and a half.
